Space has mystified human civilisation for centuries. The marvels and majesties that it holds can barely be fathomed. The all-female crew of the Blue Origin rocket took a small step to understand it, while ensuring it was in their otherworldly best. The shuttle's roster featured celebrities like Katy Perry, Lauren Sanchez, Kerianne Flynn and Gayle King with Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen on the historic mission. The 11-minute journey to the edge of space in the New Shepard suborbital rocket has been all the buzz; for its space flight and for its space style. Conquering a new realm was meant to be done in custom-fitted designer wear, it seems.
The Blue Origin crew donned electric blue flight suits which were custom-made for the space flight. Featuring dual panels of cobalt and navy blue, a flared silhouette over the leg and long sleeves with a zippered front, the striking skintight number was designed by Monse. The New York-based label was founded in 2015 by Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, both of whom have previously worked at Oscar de la Renta.
Monse finds inspiration in menswear and classic tailoring, so creating a female flight suit with a masculine-themed background definitely required finesse. The label described their custom flight suits as a blend of style and strength, where femininity redefined itself when it stepped fearlessly into new, unchartered territories.
If there was one worry the Blue Origin crew members didn’t have, it would be about their ensembles. They were made of flame-resistant stretch neoprene with the inclusion of fashionable flair from the zippered details and flared length. Lauren Sanchez, a key crew member, partnered with the designers in 2024 to create the suit for her female flight-mates. What made it novel was that such suits are generally fitted for males and then tailored to fit female bodies. Such a customised fit the Blue Origin looks boast of, that the crew members required 3D body scans in order for the silhouettes to perfectly fit their proportions.
Celebrities across the planet may be making style statements across red carpets and beaches of the globe but only few, like Katy and Lauren, can say theirs was from out of this world.
