Fitness techniques may change according to the trends but for Akshay Kumar fitness routine isn’t trendy, it's disciplined and consistent. At 59, he shows the world that age is no obstacle to staying active, energetic, and fit.
Akshay has never shied away from a physically demanding role, often performing his own stunts along the way. From martial arts and functional training to a regulated sleep schedule and mindful eating, his wellness philosophy goes far beyond simply working out. So, what does his philosophy really look like? Here’s the reveal.
FOR STARTERS, AKSHAY IS AN EARLY BIRD
Akshay Kumar’s day begins long before the average person's even hits snooze. The actor has publicly revealed his regular habit to start his day at 4 AM, a habit he has been carrying on since he was taught the importance of a proper sleeping pattern.
But this isn't simply about waking up at odd hours, those extra hours in the morning gives him the time that is needed for himself before his hectic day kicks in. But of course an early morning comes with an early night's sleep. The actor reportedly sleeps around 9 PM to complete an 8-hour sleep cycle.
Akshay sees sleep as a part of working out. He has often spoken about prioritising around seven to eight hours of sleep, for the body to recharge after a long active day. He sees recovery as an important part of the routine.
TRAIN FOR MOVEMENT NOT FOR MUSCLES
Rather than relying solely on weights and building muscles , Akshay Kumar opts for functional fitness and movements. His daily exercising looks like a mix of jogging, cycling, swimming and yoga. He has spoken about practicing rock climbing, and bodyweight exercises, which build functional strength, core stability and overall agility.
Kickboxing is also a part of his routine, which builds coordination and edurance. Akshay focuses less on building bulk and more on keeping himself flexible and ready for physical demands of his action-packed roles.
MARTIAL ARTS BRINGS IN THE DECIPLINE
He isn't known as the 'Khiladi' for nothing. Known for performing many of his own stunts, for Akshay, martial Arts has been a prominent part of his life since his teenage years. With a black belt in Taekwondo and Muay Thai training in Thailand, his expertise in martial arts runs deep. The practice works the body through kicking, punching, footwork and movement, stretching and activating every body muscle in existence, making it an ideal workout session.
For Akshay, the practice has always been about more than fighting. He has said that martial arts disciplines him and once revealed that he practised for around two hours a day. That focus and consistency have continued to shape his approach to fitness.
He has gone to the exteng of crediting martial arts with teaching him discipline, determination, willpower and punctuality qualities he says have stayed with him throughout his life and career.
KEEP FOOD SIMPLE AND EAT EARLY
He doesn’t believe in making food overly complicated. His meals are centred around simple, familiar foods, with his nutritionist describing his preference for plain, sattvic food flavoured with fresh herbs. He has also spoken about choosing light options such as vegetables, salads and soup when hungry later in the evening.
Timing is just as important to him. Akshay has repeatedly said that he finishes dinner around 6:30 PM, giving himself several hours before his 9 PM bedtime. For him, an early dinner fits naturally into a lifestyle built around early mornings, proper sleep and a disciplined routine.
THE SKIPPABLE HABITS
Akshay Kumar’s wellness routine is also defined by the habits he chooses to leave out. He has said that he doesn’t smoke or drink, with the actor admitting that he simply doesn’t enjoy alcohol.
Rather than relying on extremes, his approach comes down to moderation and consistency. Even when he eats foods like the quintessential Indian indulgences, he has said he doesn’t count every calorie or protein intake choosing a routine he can stick to instead.
Akshay Kumars’s wellness philosophy is the perfect example that there is no quick fix to staying fit. At 59 he is turning healthy habits into a way of life, this makes his approach to wellness worth taking notes from. From prioritising sleep and movement to keeping his diet simple, his routine proves that fitness is less about short-lived transformations and more about habits that can stand the test of time. Because when it comes to aging well, consistency may just be the strongest wellness philosophy of all.
