The hottest manicure trend of 2026 isn't a manicure at all

This season, chrome designs, intricate charms and bold colours have all taken a back seat as bare nails have become the new status symbol. Once viewed as unkempt, natural nails have become the beauty trend of choice, especially among the affluent. Celebrities such as Zendaya, Hailey Bieber, Sofia Richie, Victoria Beckham and Selena Gomez have embraced the look on red carpets, runways and across social media. The trend has transcended generations and demographics, becoming symbolic of a certain level of effortless nonchalance.

Nail art in the rearview mirror

Nail art has long been viewed as a symbol of wealth, with everything from intricate designs to crystal embellishment adding to the cost of an already expensive manicure. It represented an attainable form of luxury. However, as manicured hands and long nail extensions have become increasingly accessible, the equation has shifted in favour of clean, polish-free and natural-looking nails.

The rise of the no-manicure manicure

The trend aligns perfectly with the "clean girl" aesthetic, which emerged as a response to the overconsumption associated with beauty culture. As makeup routines, skincare regimens and haircare rituals became increasingly elaborate, many began gravitating towards a simpler approach.

Traditional manicures also require a significant time commitment, from the initial appointment to regular fill-ins and eventual removal. For many, the naked manicure has become less about aesthetics and more about convenience. Spending several hours each month maintaining intricate nail designs no longer feels worthwhile, particularly when a low-maintenance alternative offers the same polished appearance.

Many professions, including medicine and culinary arts, either discourage or prohibit nail polish because it can interfere with work and increase the risk of contamination or errors. Dermatologists have also cautioned against the frequent use of gel polish, acrylics and nail extensions, noting that they can weaken nails over time. Healthy, natural nails have increasingly become a reflection of self-care, wellness and attention to detail.

Clean girl beauty continues

In 2026, the beauty hierarchy has undergone a complete reversal. Bare nails, once considered low-maintenance to the point of being unfashionable, have become synonymous with understated luxury, while overly elaborate manicures no longer carry the same status they once did. The industry has shifted towards minimalism, embracing a quieter, more effortless interpretation of beauty.
