Chris Evans almost let the cat out of the bag before he proposed to Alba Baptista

When promoting his recent movie, Materialists, Hollywood actor Chris Evans revealed how he proposed to his now-wife, Alba Baptista, which the couple has kept tightly under wraps. The 43-year-old actor shared that he learnt how to say 'will you marry me?' in Portuguese in order to woo his then-girlfriend, and in the bargain, nearly let the cat out of the bag when doing so. 

"Maybe I shouldn't even be saying this. I proposed to my now-wife in Portuguese; she's Portuguese," Evans said, at the New York premiere of his movie. "So I learnt how to say, 'Will you marry me?' in Portuguese. And I had practised all week. I had practised it so much that; while she and I, I'd be making breakfast and you almost just start saying it out loud and you're like, 'oh God,'" he added while chuckling. "That's not just a song that's stuck in my head, it's gonna let the cat out of the bag." Usually private about his relationship, Evans mentioned he was "really nervous" when the big moment happened. "I actually think I screwed it up," he said. "But I still know it!", he announced, triumphantly.

They first made their relationship Instagram official in November 2022 and by that point, the two of them had already been dating for over a year in secret, as evident by the adorable reel shared by Evans. This didn't come as a surprise to many, as the actor had spoken about settling down in his People’s Sexiest Man Alive feature in 2022. He had said, “That’s absolutely something I want. Wife, kids, building a family – I love the idea of tradition and ceremony. I had a lot of that in my life so the idea of creating that – I can’t think of anything better,” hinting at then-finding a partner he could build his family with.

Along with being the Sexiest Man Alive, Evans also steals the title of being a thoughtful one as well, making all his fans collectively swoon. Evans has been married to Baptista, for nearly two years and millions of hearts all over the world broke when the Captain America star married the Warrior Nun actress in a secret ceremony in September 2023. The couple decided to marry after dating for two year and until date, images of their wedding ceremony are yet to see the light of day.

The couple had two wedding ceremonies, as revealed by Chris Evans while attending Comic Con in New York in 2023. “We kind of had two ceremonies. We had one on the East Coast; we did one in Portugal—my wife’s Portuguese.  But they were just wonderful and beautiful. It’s a lot planning a wedding—for those of you who are married, you know it takes a lot out of you. But now that we’re through that, we’ve just kind of been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn—my favourite season. It’s, like, the best time of year right now. Now we’re just relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting," expressed the actor, as reported by Page Six. The couple maintained their privacy by allegedly making their guests sign NDAs and fortifying their phones. The guest list reportedly included some of Evans' Avengers co-stars, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner. 

They made their first red carpet appearance post their wedding in March 2024, during the Vanity Fair Oscars party. The Knives Out actor was spotted in a red suit paired with a white shirt and black tie underneath, while the Portuguese actress wore a sleek white and black dress paired with a delicate diamond necklace, while showing off her diamond wedding ring.
