7 iconic Cannes Film Festival looks that we won't be seeing again on the red carpet

Alongside showcasing cinematic masterpieces, the Cannes Film Festival is well known for its iconic red carpet appearances. Every year, many stunning celebrities from across the world bring their fashion A-game to the annual film fest; including Indian celebrities like Aishwarya Rai as well as many Hollywood names such as Bella Hadid, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and more. These stars have dazzled everyone on the red carpet with their jaw-dropping appearances. Bella Hadid in the Schiaparelli lung necklace was an iconic fashion moment that will go down in history, Natalie Portman revived an archival Dior gown on the Cannes red carpet not too long ago, Aishwarya Rai in the lilac gown was a cultural reset for Indian red carpet fashion.

These iconic looks are some of the many that we possibly won't see again (or versions and recreations of them) in the future. Why? Because a day ahead of the Cannes Film Festival 2025, the committee has enforced a new rule that might change the red carpet forever.

A new rule may have shaken up hundreds of pre-planned outfits, as the new Cannes dress code prohibits nudity and voluminous gowns; two styles of outfits that have become common styles at the festival. Additionally, even long train gowns have been banished from the red carpet. Don't expect that your favourite celebrity can flout this rule, as the Cannes charter dictates that any celebrity violating the rule will be prohibited access from the red carpet.

1. Bella Hadid in a schiaparelli necklace 

Bella Hadid walked at Cannes in 2021 wearing a stunning Schiaparelli necklace over a bare black dress from the house that had a plunging neckline. Thanks to Cannes' new rule, we may not get such iconic 'jewellery as clothing' moments on the red carpet again. 

2. Aishwarya Rai's Michael Cinco gown

Aishwarya Rai has been a constant at the Cannes Film Festival since her debut in 2002 for Devdas alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This long run at Cannes led to many incredible fashion moments; one of them being this voluminous powder blue dress by Michael Cinco Couture during the film festival in 2017. This kind of billowy dress will no longer be allowed to make an appearance on the carpet.

3. Cameron Diaz's naked dress

Cameron Diaz wore a black dress by Emaneul Ungaro with mesh details to the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2002. While this dress may not be considered particularly controversial today, at the time, it was quick to make headlines and might not get a pass from the new red carpet rule.

4. Bella Hadid naked dress

Known for making headlines at the festival every year, Bella Hadid's iconic black sequin dress from Atelier Versace at the 77th Cannes Film festival was a stunning piece of couture. As it might not pass the new ban, the diva might have to find another way to make a statement this year.  

5. Natalie Portman's Dior couture 

Time stopped when Natalie Portman walked in wearing a recreation of 1949 archival Junon Dior haute couture piece at Cannes Film Festival 2023. Everyone in the fashion world was stunned by this fashion moment during the 76th edition of the film festival.

6. Emily Ratajkowski In Miu Miu 

The sheer dress Emily Ratajkowski wore by Miu Miu during the event at Cannes was a daring look that had all her fans fawning. However, such sheer dresses maybe limited at the festival henceforth. 

7. Mrunal Thakur In 

This voluminous white cutout dress with a trail worn by Mrunal Thakur violates almost every single new rule from the Cannes charter but was definitely a delight for the fashion world when the actress walked down the Cannes red carpet decked in this dress by Falguni Shane Peacock in the year 2023.
