The ongoing Cannes Film Festival is serving iconic fashion moments without any breaks, from Bella Hadid's Anthony Vaccarello dress for Saint Laurent to Jennifer Lawrence's vintage-inspired Dior couture. This cannes season has been full of master designers' best works. Joining the leagues of these visionaries is India's beloved couturier, Gaurav Gupta.
The overlord of the Indian fashion world has styled many Bollywood and International celebrities including but not limited to Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Beyoncé, Shakira, Cardi B, Jennifer Hudson and Jenna Ortega. Joining the league of his celebrity clientele is Halle Berry, who opted for a burgundy-hued Corseted Bordeaux Spiral Gown while attending the Chopard Universe dinner at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
The actress revealed that the gown was going to be worn by her earlier on the first day of the Cannes film festival for her jury look, but she couldn't wear it due to the newly introduced Cannes dress code that suggested limiting long trains, a feature of this dress. However, she took the Chopard dinner as an opportunity to flaunt the beautiful piece of couture.
The burgundy-coloured dress had a corseted-boned bodice; the skirt of the dress features a quintessentially Gaurav Gupta architectural sculpted trail that unfurls from waist down. The look featured a 3D floral rosette at her right hip, while the rest of the silk fabric flowed with ease as a skirt featuring a thigh-high slit at the centre of the ensemble.
The Oscar-winning actress paired her powerful yet sensuous look with a pair of pointed-toe wine-coloured pumps. Her short-bob was styled in tight curls, placing emphasis on her dangling diamond and ruby earrings. For the makeup, Berry opted for blushed cheeks, nude-coloured lips and soft eyeshadow on her eyelids.
This was both "powerful" and "sensuous" in Gupta's own words, as captioned on his Instagram post shared by the designer. The couture featured his style and added the right amount of flair needed for the coveted dinner party.
This wasn't the first time a Gaurav Gupta piece of Couture turned heads at the Cannes Film Festival: During the Cannes Film Festival held in 2024, Aditi Rao Hydari wore a custom black velvet Gaurav Gupta gown with a white, celestial-like shell.
It would be wrong to not add Cannes veteran to this coveted list who sported a Gaurav Gupta creation at the Cannes Film Festival, Aishwarya Rai made a captivating appearance at the screening of Armageddon Time during the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival, wearing the custom blush-pink coloured Venus Sculpture gown by Gaurav Gupta. Making head turns at Cannes in 2022, the Bollywood actress wore a shell-inspired gown with intricate detailing. The gown featuring glass beads, crystals, and embroidery took 3500 man-hours to be completed. The Devdas-famed actress, known for making many jaw-dropping appearances at Cannes over the years, added on more to her mantle with this piece of couture.
The following year, content creator and beauty founder Diipa Buller Khosla donned on the gilded gold waves Gown by Gaurav Gupta from the designer's spring/summer 2023 collection titled Secret of Shores for the 76th Cannes Film Festival. In 2019 Indian actress Huma Qureshi walked down the Cannes red carpet in a dramatic silver gown by the designer. With an Oscar-winning celebrity adorned in couture by Gaurav Gupta , its a matter of time before we see the beloved Indian couturier everywhere.
