Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Rodgers, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik, and The Weeknd and Selena Gomez are not just a random grouping of former celebrity couples. What they are also are victims of the infamous Met Gala curse. For the uninitiated, the Met Gala curse is the unfortunate separations of relationships that featured a loved-up Met Gala red carpet appearance as a couple during their time together. Remember Taylor Swift meeting not one, but two iconic beaus at the Met? In 2016, she met Tom Hiddleston with, with whom she had a brief affair with. Later that year, she met her 'Lover' era muse, Joe Alwyn and their relationship ended six long years later, leaving her a tortured poet by the end of it. Even Kim Kardashian's two relationships ended after a Met appearance.
Many marriages and relationships met their end not too soon after walking the red carpet hand in hand. This curse has many new couples scared to walk the red carpet hand-in-hand after the notoriety of the Met Gala curse. However, there are some couples who escaped the Met Gala curse unscathed. These are the ones who have proved that their flaunting of the relationships is no danger to their relationship status. For them, the Met Gala curse is nothing but our fatalist attitudes doing the talking.
Scroll down below to find out about the bonds that were strong enough for this curse to touch.
1. Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse
In May 2023, Batman actor, Robert Pattinson, walked the Met Gala red carpet along with his long-time girlfriend and singer Suki Waterhouse. The couple has since welcomed their beautiful baby in March 2024 and are believed to be hitched but neither of them has confirmed the rumours of their secret marriage. They are one of the many couples who safely flaunted their love at the Met Gala and have since, only gotten closer to each other.
2. Hailey Bieber and Justin Bieber
Hailey Bieber has been the victim of the Met Gala curse once before. The Met curse broke up Hailey’s past relationship with singer Shawn Mendes, whom she walked the Met Gala red carpet with in 2018. But different things were written in the stars for her, as she later walked the very same red carpet with her husband, Justin Bieber. The couple, whose romance has not seen a break from headlines since their wedding in late 2018, walked the Met Gala red carpet in 2021; both decked in black.
3. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
The couple have braved the Met Gala curse multiple times and their joint appearances on the red carpet have been among the show-stopping moments of the night. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds made their couple debut on the red carpet in the year 2014. The couple, have since, made multiple appearances where we have seen Ryan losing his mind over some of Blake's best fashion moments from over the years.
4. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra
In 2017, Bollywood's desi girl, Priyanka Chopra, and her rockstar husband, Nick Jonas, made their iconic Met Gala debut. Priyanka Chopra's Ralph Lauren dress stole the show as it became overnight meme material, but the couple looked nothing short of adorable. The two are still going strong and raising their daughter, Malti Marie Jonas, while looking so in love years after their first appearance.
5. A$AP Rocky and Rihanna
A$AP Rocky is one of the co-chairs for this year's Met Gala, making us cross our fingers for a potential re-appearance by Rihanna. The couple have made many head-turning appearances before. In May of 2021, the couple looked stunning while getting their pictures taken on the red carpet.
6. David and Victoria Beckham
Posh Spice, a.k.a. Victoria Beckham, and her footballer husband, David Beckham, have walked the Met Gala red carpet many times over the years, with their first appearance dating back to 2008. The singer-turned-fashion designer has always made a statement when appearing at the Met Gala, with her husband usually by her side in a matching tuxedo. The couple have been going strong since their early years of stardom and are raising their three children together.
7. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
Another one of the couples that successfully proved the Met Gala curse wrong are Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. The two have been married since 2006 and are raising two daughters together. The couple attended the Met Gala 2024 in matching black and white outfits, making those around swoon in awe.
