When Taare Zameen Par was released in 2007, it left people teary-eyed as they exited the theatre. The movie captivated hearts well beyond its years. The movie, which starred Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary, raised questions about the drastically neglected Indian education system for intellectually challenged children. This movie was among the most sought-after films of its time, admired to even this day,
Now, Aamir Khan is back with an unrelated sequel to the same, Sitaare Zameen Par, where he is working with a cast of differently-abled young adults. The movie sees Aamir Khan playing the lead role, with Genelia D'Souza portraying the role of his wife; the movie also features 10 differently-abled actors. The movie, which hits screens today, had a star-studded premiere last night that saw the cast in some of the most magnetic outfits tailored to perfection by designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.
Movie premieres are an ideal opportunity for fashion designers to show their creative flair and translate it to red carpet premieres. For Sitaare Zameen Par's premiere, the entire cast – Aamir Khan, Genelia D'Souza, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar – were dressed in bespoke ensembles crafted especially for the occasion.
While Abu Sandeep are no strangers to high glamour, this project holds a particularly special place in their hearts. Longstanding champions of individuality, they are known for redefining norms and celebrating authenticity. Designing for the Sitaare felt like a natural extension of their ethos—a seamless blend of creativity and individualism.
“I was touched by how enthusiastic and vocal the differently-abled young adult actors were about their looks! They had the most adorable requests—some wanted their nails and hair done, while others wanted to dress like Aamir, Shah Rukh, or Salman—you name it. Simran dreamt of being a princess. It was another memorable highlight of our careers,” shared Khosla while talking about his experience working with the adorable star cast.
“We were absolutely delighted when Team Sitaare Zameen Par approached us for a personal collaboration. Aamir Khan is a phenomenal director and actor, with a heart. We began our journeys around the same time, nearly four decades ago, and it feels meaningful to collaborate on something so heartfelt. Genelia is an absolute sweetheart, and the Sitaare were pure joy. Seeing their smiles and their unique, unscripted interactions with us was truly the most rewarding part of it all.”
They were all dressed in similar outfits for all 9 actors and a princess-like outfit for the only female actress on the team, Simaran Mangeshkar. Their designs displayed a sense of unity by subtle standardisation while designing these resplendent outfits, while ensuring that they honoured individual requests made by the star cast, ensuring that each young star exudes their unique sparkle.
As premieres can run long and be a tiring affair, the designers prioritised the cast's comfort by opting for natural yet opulent fabrics that made use of skin-friendly embroidery, so even the most ornate ensembles were soft and wearable. The male cast wore black sherwanis and jackets accented with Ajrakh and Bandhani over soft muslin shirts, whereas the only girl on the cast, Simran, channelled her inner princess in a dreamy Aabla skirt adorned with hand-embroidered sparkle motifs, paired with a complementing ruffled blouse.
As for Aamir Khan and Genelia D'Souza, their custom-made outfits featured chikankari. D'Souza looked ethereal in a cream and white chikankari saree, with her hair tied back in a sleek ponytail and pairing her outfit with traditional jewellery. As for Khan, he looked dapper in a white chikankari buttoned sherwani and salwar that he paired with chunky brown boots and a pair of thick black glasses; he also sported a moustache reminiscent of his Mangal Panday era.
Many A-Listers and Bollywood dignitaries were present at the premiere of the movie, among whom were the other two Khans of Bollywood – Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Their interaction with the rest of the cast has led to some wholesome and adorable moments that the internet cannot have enough of.
