To be able to perceive the untapped potential of something mundane—and possessing the courage to transpire and reimagine it into something entirely new—is a skill that eludes most. While many chase the extraordinary, only few have the vision to go past the conventions and think outside the box. Amit Aggarwal, revered for this particular ability, greets everyday as a realm of possibility; a blank canvas waiting to be filled with new concepts and shapes, driven by the faith that each material has its own unique voice that can be sculpted into form.

The designer's most recent exhibit at Lakmé Fashion Week 2025 with his new ready-to-wear pret line, showcased an eclectic culmination of fashion and technology. Exuding versatility is his signature code of design. The collection was punctuated with classic tailoring, unexpected draping, structural yet fluid silhouettes and functional layering pieces characterised by bold details. Think of rich jewel tones, high-quality fabrics, and playful embellishments, like sequins on shoes and metallic accents on outerwear. Catching the designer close on the heels of the launch of his Spring Summer Pret Collection as well as his showcase brought together fashion and tech like never before. HELLO! caught up with the designer to gain insights into his creative evolution, fluid design language, and what the coming year has in store.

THE BANARASI EDIT

A compelling testament to Amit Aggarwal’s belief in creating the extraordinary from the ordinary was his rendition of the vintage classic Banarasi saree, titled The Banarasi Edit. A product of his sheer tenacity to create beyond the ‘normal’, the edit celebrates his desire to merge the essence of the traditional while embracing the spirit of the modern Indian woman. “At the core of this reimagining was the idea that the modern Indian woman is multifaceted—she's rooted in tradition but isn’t bound by it,” he shared. “She moves between worlds with confidence and grace, and I wanted the saree to reflect that.” With this edit, Aggarwal altered the discourse on the silhouette, elevating it from merely a ceremonial attire into a bold articulation of identity, a symbol of empowerment, and a seamless dialogue between legacy and evolution.

TRENDS FOR 2025

Exuding a unique cognisance of textiles and forms rarely does the language of materials come as intuitively to fashion connoisseurs as it does to Amit Aggarwal. Naturally, when it comes to mapping the trajectory of fashion for the coming year, his word holds weight. “2025 is all about transformative silhouettes,” he said. “Expect sculptural shapes that lean into bold geometry and futuristic forms; angular lines, exaggerated shoulders, and fluid draping that adds a captivating, three-dimensional effect.”

He envisions tailoring evolving toward fluidity, breaking free from rigid structures to embrace softer contours. Volume, too, will take centre stage; not merely in scale but also in intention, shaping garments that are expressive yet considered. As the fashion colloquy becomes rife with merging the past and the present, Aggarwal identifies heritage as an inherent muse, filtered through modern silhouettes, a balance seen in his own collections as well.

CREATIVE PROCESS: DYNAMISM DRAWN FROM ABSTRACTION

The stalwart has previously mentioned in other interviews how unconventional, evolving and emotionally charged his creative process is, albeit synonymous with his creations. While a material or textile evokes a certain emotion, he finds excitement in unravelling his creations one layer at a time instead of envisioning the final product right from the outset. “My creative process is deeply influenced by various disciplines, including architecture, physics, and even kinetic art,” he shared. “I’ve always been fascinated by how these fields approach structure, space, and movement, and I often draw from their principles to inform my designs.” At the heart of his design philosophy lies a deep-rooted focus on innovative textures and fabrics, often combining traditional textiles with modern techniques.

Each of his collections is largely shaped by seasonal context, new inspirations, and the ever-changing cultural landscape. His silhouettes and proportions, much like his ethos, reflect his exploration of new possibilities in design.

ELEMENTS OF COUTURE

Amit Aggarwal’s ability to transform abstract ideas into wearable art is rooted in his profundity of both material and textiles. His ongoing experimentation with innovative fabrics allows him to harness texture not only for visual impact but also for movement and interactivity so as to enhance the experience of wearing them.  At the core of his design ethos lies a commitment to sculptural silhouettes, where the body becomes a canvas for expression, constantly redefined through a synergy of art, science, and fashion. “Over time, my understanding of structure has shifted. Initially, I viewed it as rigid and mechanical—defining the form of a design in a literal way. But with experimentation in textiles and technology, I’ve come to see structure as something that holds identity while being adaptable and transformative,” he elucidated. “Now, it’s more about the interaction between material and technology—how fabric behaves, reacts, and flows. It’s the balance between precision and fluidity, between engineering and the softness of the human form.”

For a designer constantly balancing innovation, responsible craftsmanship, and cultural relevance, challenges become an opportunity to reimagine and reinvent. With his pursuit not just limited to making beautiful clothing but also one that is meaningful and ethical, he practices sustainability as an ongoing journey, not a destination. This conscious philosophy also extends to his fair, transparent treatment of artisans, empowering their minds in the process.

With the fashion industry oscillating between commercial appeal and aesthetic sales, Amit Aggarwal stands on solid ground as a designer in pursuit of culminating art and anatomy. After having designed garments for over 23 years, his favourite silhouettes are the ones that blend structured experimentation with fluid elegance. “I love creating shapes with strong, angular lines and innovative draping techniques that give the garment a sense of depth and movement,” he said. As he looks ahead, the possibility of collaborating with artist Anish Kapoor excites him; not merely for the artistic synergy, but for the chance to fuse fashion with spatial exploration, creating pieces synonymous with experiential art.

Rewriting the boundaries of Indian couture one innovation at a time, Aggarwal has a lot of magic that is yet to be unravelled.
