Rooted in centuries of heritage, Indian jewellery reflects a symbolic language beyond a mere fashion statement. This July, London's iconic Harrods becomes the new address for a celebration fitting for timeless Indian jewels—the historic display of Sabyasachi High Jewellery. This meeting of global luxury and Indian craftsmanship is set to take over the legendary emporium's private Penthouse Suite. From July 21-27, the flagship store in Knightsbridge will play host to a week-long jewellery showcase unlike any other.
Those familiar with the world of Sabyasachi Mukherjee would be confident in suggesting that this isn't a regular jewellery presentation—it's a deep dive into his world of colour, culture and fine Indian craftsmanship. A master storyteller and a connoisseur in his craft, the Kolkata-born designer continues to blur lines with his jewellery at this showcase, after his success in the world of couture. Now, through his fine jewellery maison, he redefines conventional hierarchies of preciousness, where tradition is never nostalgic and modernity never loses its soul.
Since its inception, Sabyasachi has created a new language in jewellery; one rooted in heritage Indian craft and goldsmithing traditions of North Calcutta, which challenges the reverence of stones and assumptions of value.
As designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee remarked, “My two decades as a colourist guides me as a jeweller, especially when working with multi-coloured gemstones. For me, the quality of gemstones is a given, but the beauty of jewellery-making is in disrupting the hierarchy of precious stones and mixing them in a fierce amalgamation of modernity and traditionalism.”
The Sabyasachi Jewellery x Harrods presentation will spotlight curated pieces from two of the design house’s most evocative collections — Bengal Royale and Bengal Byzantine Broadway — each steeped in history, layered in symbolism, and rich in emotion.
The Bengal Royale celebrates the culmination of Western imagery with Indian discourse through its designs. With echoes crossing the Georgian age, imagine European techniques, Mughal heritage, and Bengal filigree craftsmanship come alive through pieces of bijouterie. That's Sabyasachi's ode to an era of thought, and sartorial brilliance replete with precious gemstones and diamonds.
Mingling the master craftsmanship of Bengal with the theatrical power of gilded Byzantine magnificence gives birth to the Bengal Byzantine Broadway. Each piece in this collection creates a curious contemporary dialogue between legacy and perspective. A celebration of Art Deco geometry, tropical whimsy, and heritage Indian embroideries that showcase the work of masterful Bengal craftsmen.
“I am honoured to present Sabyasachi High Jewellery at Harrods in London — the epicentre of taste and sophistication,” says Mukherjee. “Together, we will delight the senses of the world’s most discerning and uncompromising customers.”
Sabyasachi has emerged as one of India's most globally celebrated fashion powerhouses ever since its eponymous inception in 1999. With the High Jewellery entering the hallowed halls of Harrods, one thing's for certain; Indian craftsmanship has not only arrived—it's here to reign.
