Janhvi Kapoor is taking it upon herself to revive this peek-a-boo lingerie trend

Janhvi Kapoor was recently spotted in London attending a Miu Miu store launch. For the occasion, she stepped out in a fitted black midi dress that came with narrow straps, a black bucket hat, dazzling calf-length socks and a pair of matching Mary Jane-style shoes. However, the article of clothing that stole our attention was the skin toned bra that the 28-year-old actress sported. Very on brand for Miu Miu, a label known for its style of layering, Janhvi's ensemble refreshed our memories of the exposed lingerie look, a.k.a. the peekaboo bra trend of 2023. 

Along with the sheer dress trend and no-pants trends, the exposed bra trend of the early 2020s is one of the many that made headlines during the decade – all being risqué, sexy and controversial, all at once. Last year saw multiple fashion girlies and actresses showing off their itty bitty bras in unique styles. This trend was everywhere; from their summer vacations to street style to red carpets that had everyone talking about them. It might have even been one of the reasons for the new rules at Cannes to be enforced at the festival. The exposed or peek-a-boo bra trend has all kinds of variations. You can tease with the straps on display, have the cups peeking from the front or be bold enough to step out in lingerie as outerwear all by itself.

1. Alia Bhatt

While promoting her film, Jigraa, Alia Bhatt stepped out in a black corset and pants set with a printed bra peeking out from the top in October 2024.  Her ensemble consisted of an ash-grey corset top that had drawstrings on both sides of the waist and a smocked detail at the back. The top featured printed bra flaps peeking through, giving it a bunny ear resemblance. She paired it with straight-fit black pants. Big silver hoops elevated the otherwise monochrome look.

2. Gigi Hadid 

Gigi Hadid flaunted her toned abs and sun-kissed body in a post she captioned "...been summering!". Her outfit included denim shorts and a dainty bra with daisies all over it, adding a touch of floral to her summer look. She accessorised her look with a black baseball cap that had the words "Deep Funk and Divine Intervention, Hollywood CA " embroidered on it. Three gold necklaces were layered around her neck, featuring several charms that served as a masterclass in summer accessorising. 

3. Elsa Hosk 

Elsa Hosk stepped out in the LA sun wearing an exposed white and blue striped bra with a shirt over it that had all but the bottom button open; leaving the bra with a dainty little bow and lace details on display. She neatly tucked her shirt in her white pants. She secured her pants with a white belt with gold loops while adding plenty of mixed metal jewellery to complete her look. These included a pair of gold loops, chunky rings and mixed bracelets. For shoes, the model opted for white pumps and was seen carrying a sleek brown bag. Hosk styled her blonde hair in a freshly done blow-out, while her makeup included brown lip liner paired with nude lip matte lipstick and a red-pink shade of blush.  

4. Natalie Portman 

For Jimmy Kimmel Live in January 2024, Natalie Portman had her own peek-a-boo moment dressed in Versace. For the occasion, the actress opted for a little black dress featuring a structured skirt. A sheer black bralette peeked out from the top of the strapless dress that complemented the dress well, which was an understated way of participating in the trend. The Academy Award-winning actress paired her dress with black heels. 

5. Sydney Sweeney 

When attending the GLAAD Media Awards 2024, Sydney Sweeney opted for a pale blue silk Miu Miu gown with a dramatic floor-length train. The dress featured a rhinestone-embellished bra peeking out of the gown that was cleverly stitched into the dress. Prior to this, Sydney Sweeney also participated in this trend while attending the Cannes Film Festival with her ex-fiancé, Johnathon Davino, in a powder-blue slip dress by Miu Miu, which she layered over a similarly silky sky-blue bra. 

6. Scarlett Johansson 

For the Cannes Film Festival screening of Wes Anderson's Asteroid City in 2023, Scarlett Johansson walked the red carpet in a custom Prada bubblegum pink gown and a white bra. The moment stole the show and got the cameras clicking, as a bold ensemble such as that on the carpet is rarely expected from a mainstream Hollywood star. She paired it with diamond earrings and a gold ring. As for makeup, the actress opted for orange-red lips, blush-laden cheeks and a bit of highlighter in the inner corner of her eyes. Her fingernails featured a chrome pink manicure.
