On September 4, we saw the end of an era, the demise of Giorgio Armani; a force in fashion left the world at the age of 91. The Italian powerhouse revolutionised the way people dress, most famously seen on the red carpets. The man, who was born in an era of rigid traditions and styles, was ahead of the curve as he started instilling socially fluid designs on his runway. His tailoring for men and women was unmatched, and with his passing, he leaves a lasting legacy in the craft. The chief impact he made on the fashion world was popularising suits among women and softening them a bit for men.
Born in war-torn Italy, Armani's early years were marked by the ugly realities of life in war. As a young boy, he witnessed the death of his friend and was severely burned in a catastrophic incident. He grew up to try his hand in many professions, but the one that struck a chord was his job at a department store, where he rose in rank and gained an interest in clothmaking.
When Giorgio Armani began his eponymous label, he focused largely on menswear. In 1980, he won the contract to dress Richard Gere in American Gigolo, and so it began his journey to dress celebrities with his masterfully tailoured ensembles in movies, and eventually on the red carpet.
In honour of his life and work, we have curated a list of the best red carpet looks of the late designer with his creative flair on some of the world's notable fashion influencers.
