5 of the most spectacular castles steeped in royal history

Towering above lakes, mountains, and forests, the world's most marvellous castles with a royal connection are more than just buildings. They carry history, artistry, and royal touch. Built centuries ago, they continue to stand strong and majestic, making them must-visit destinations for travellers around the world. Today, HELLO! India traces five of the most intriguing ones, which are steeped in nobility and royal history.

1. Eltz Castle, Germany

Hidden in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Eltz Castle is one of Germany’s most enchanting castles. Built on a 70-metre-high rock spur and surrounded on three sides by the Elzbach River, it appears straight out of a fairytale. Set deep within the forested Elzbach Valley, its eight towers, along with its timber-framed structures, turrets, and steep roofs, make it the epitome of a medieval castle. Remarkably preserved for over 850 years, the castle boasts richly furnished medieval and Renaissance interiors, featuring stained-glass windows, wall murals, and historic artworks.

2. Pena Palace, Portugal

This palace is considered one of the ‘Seven Wonders of Portugal’. Found in the São Pedro de Penaferrim district, it is nestled high in the Sintra mountains. The palace was designed for Portugal’s late-dynasty royals. The architecture is a mix of eclectic styles, including Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, and Neo-Renaissance influences. The interiors are filled with whimsical patterns, tiles, and rich fabrics throughout. The vibrant red-and-yellow castle is surrounded by Pena Park, a 200-hectare area with trees from diverse regions, totaling over 500 species.

3. City Palace, India

This royal palace is built atop a hill in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Commissioned by Maharana Udai Singh II, it was built over 400 years by 22 generations of Mewar rulers. The property overlooks Lake Pichola and was designed by blending Rajasthani, Mughal, and European styles. It features 11 linked palaces, including Suraj Gokhda, Mor Chowk, Dilkhush Mahal, Surya Chopar, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, and more. It is lavishly decorated with jharokhas, chhatris, and intricate inlay and mirror work.

4. Himeji Castle, Japan

Perched atop a hill in Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture, Himeji Castle is the largest and most visited castle in Japan. Known as the “White Heron Castle” for its striking pearly white exterior, it is considered the finest example of traditional Japanese castle architecture. The complex comprises 83 buildings constructed from stone and wood, featuring maze-like pathways and advanced defensive systems. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The castle has a concentric three-moat defense system around it.

5. Château de Chambord, France

Set in the Loire Valley, Château de Chambord is one of France’s most recognisable Renaissance castles. Commissioned by King François I in the 16th century, the grand château combines traditional French medieval architecture with distinctive Renaissance influences. Its elaborate towers, ornate roofline and symmetrical façade make it an architectural masterpiece, while its vast surrounding estate adds to its sense of grandeur. One of its most celebrated features is the double-helix staircase, traditionally associated with Leonardo da Vinci, which allows two people to ascend without crossing paths. Surrounded by extensive woodland and parkland, Chambord offers a striking glimpse into the opulence and ambition of France’s royal past.
