Most of us can name the actives in our serum but have never once thought about the skin under our hair. We give the face a ten-step routine and the scalp a shampoo, yet it is the same organ. The scalp has the same stratum corneum, the same lipid matrix, the same acid mantle around pH 4.5–5.5, and the highest density of sebaceous glands on the body. It is skin. However, we simply never look at it, so we notice it only when it complains.

Going beneath the surface

The usual explanation that humidity “dries out” or “tears” the barrier is wrong on both counts. High ambient humidity raises the water content of the stratum corneum. The real issue is occlusion: damp hair against a warm scalp can hold a wet microclimate for hours, and sustained occlusion swells the stratum corneum, raises surface pH and shifts the resident microbial balance. That shift matters because of what already lives there. In susceptible people, oleic acid penetrates the stratum corneum, disorganises barrier lipids and drives the clumped shedding we call flakes.

The science of a healthy scalp: What actually works

1. Contact time over frequency

A 20-second lather delivers very little. Leave the product on the scalp for four to five minutes. This single change may be more useful than repeatedly switching brands.

2. Wash the scalp, not the hair

Part the hair in sections and apply the product directly to the scalp with your fingertips. Lather running down the lengths is not a treatment.

3. Rotate your active

Alternate zinc pyrithione with piroctone olamine or ketoconazole every few weeks rather than relying on a single active indefinitely.

4. Rethink the towel turban

Twenty minutes wrapped at scalp temperature can create a humid environment around the scalp. Instead, blot the hair, then dry the roots specifically on a cool setting and allow the lengths to air-dry.

5. Rethink scalp oiling

Keep pre-wash oiling to around 30 minutes rather than leaving oil on overnight, which can increase occlusion.

Treat the scalp as skin, and maintaining its health becomes a more considered part of your haircare routine.
