
With a suitable mix of popular blockbusters and local treasures, the 71st National Film Awards honoured films certified between January 1 and December 31, 2023, showcasing a diverse range of Indian cinema.
Shah Rukh Khan's historic win of his first National Award for Best Actor for Jawan in his three-decade career, shared with Vikrant Massey for his strong leading role in 12th Fail, was at the forefront of the evening's highlights. Rani Mukerji achieved a career high when she won Best Actress for her role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway.
The moving biographical drama 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and based on the life of an aspiring UPSC officer, won Best Feature Film from the jury, which was presided over by Ashutosh Gowariker.
Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the main lead, earned Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while Sam Bahadur, starring Vicky Kaushal as Sam Manekshaw, was recognised as Best Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values.
Best Director went to Sudipto Sen for The Kerala Story, and Sanya Malhotra starrer, Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, bagged the award for Best Hindi Film.
