In Bollywood, love finds reel adaptation in many forms. No one would expect that one of those would be in reality; for none other than Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. Now known as Indian superstars with international ambassadorships and fanbases across the world, the love story of this famous couple blossomed quietly before the camera could even begin rolling. An intimate wedding at one of the world's dreamiest locations, film careers with movies watched by millions and the blessing of their daughter—they've come a long way since they met. HELLO! India takes a look at the life and times of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh's relationship through the years.
The year was 2012 and Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh; then wide-eyed actors, crossed paths on the set of Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela. On Koffee With Karan, Ranveer confessed to Karan, “There was a famous; or infamous, reading for Ram Leela at Mr Bhansali's house in Versova. I was supposed to meet him before Deepika's arrival. So, I was sitting on the table and the door was on my left. He has these heavy doors and he lives by the seaside. So, these heavy doors open and the gush of wind comes from the sea. There, Deepika enters wearing this white chikankari, hair blowing due to the sea wind just like some sadgi ki moorat. I was like, ‘Oh My God'." Playing the leads of Ram and Leela in the film, the shoots and press junkets together led to the formation of a friendship, which later deepened further.
Their careers flourished during these years, with Deepika starring in Finding Fanny and Happy New Year and Ranveer; in Gunday and Kill Dill. Yet, their electric Ram-Leela romance was hard to shake off. If that chemistry proved to be a little too steamy for simply a pair of actors, it's because there was heat behind those on-screen flames. Shortly thereafter, Ranveer and Deepika began dating. The actress was fresh out of a relationship during this initial period and was keen on taking things slow. On the same Koffee With Karan episode, Deepika shared, "I was single and he just came out of the relationship. I wanted to be single for a while because I had come out of a couple of difficult relationships.” They weren't exclusive during this phase of their relationship but couldn't stay away from each other for too long, as the actress stated that she "would always go back to him (Ranveer).”
After their relationship began to move smoothly, by 2015, Ranveer decided it was time to lock it down with Deepika. In the same episode, he shared, "At one point, when I felt right, I decided she was the one. So, I thought before anything can happen, just put a ring on it. I was in cahoots with my sister and mom, acquiring the ring. We were going on a holiday and I decided that I'd propose to her on the holiday. I got the ring. And, my folks were like, Are you going to propose? You don't want to consult her parents? I didn't have that degree or maturity back then. I was like, No, I'm marrying her so I'll ask her. So we go to the Maldives and I secretly carry the ring with me and we do the sandbank adventure." Deepika said yes and the couple's forever had officially began.
Although they never officially confirmed their relationship in the public eye, Ranveer and Deepika made multiple joint appearances and went on to share the silver screen two more times during this period of time; in Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
The couple shared their wedding invite announcement on their respective social media profiles shortly before their big day, which came as a pleasant surprise to fans. On November 14 and 15, 2018, Deepika and Ranveer were married at Lake Como in Italy. Paying tribute to their respective heritages, they held two traditional ceremonies which followed both, Sindhi and Konkani rituals. Theirs was also one of the foremost Bollywood relationships to directly announce their wedding to the public with no prior mention about their relationship; which has gone on to become a trend in the celebrity sphere since then.
After their wedding, Deepika and Ranveer were in their nesting period where their love flourished. In an interview with Femina, Ranveer said, "We’re cocooned in love, and there is no space for doubt or misgiving. It’s grounded-ness, centred-ness, security, warmth, and joy. We share experiences and laugh together. The added security that comes with marriage has allowed our relationship to blossom further." It was also during this period that they reunited on-screen once more for 83.
On the leap day of February 2024, Deepika and Ranveer announced that they were expecting a baby and their family of two was expanding to three. During the months of her pregnancy that followed, the couple rarely appeared together. They were snapped by photographers when a visibly-pregnant Deepika with Ranveer stepped out to vote in May. The couple also attended Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding in July that year.
On September 8, 2024, their daughter, Dua Padukone-Singh was born to the couple. In November, her name was revealed to mean "prayer" as their little girl was the answer to their prayers. In December 2024, they celebrated their first Christmas together with ornaments monogrammed with their names decorating their Christmas tree. Since her birth, Dua made no public appearances and hasn't been publicly photographed.
