India has been a popular tourist destination for many international celebrities, but few have embraced the country quite like British model-slash-actress-slash-entrepreneur Elizabeth Hurley. Over the years, Elizabeth has shown a deep appreciation for India, which she has documented on social media. While her connection to India began with her now ex-husband Arun Nayar as early as 2003, she continued to visit the country even after their divorce.

Elizabeth has been a visible admirer of Indian culture, often seen celebrating Indian festivals, attending cultural events, and participating in Indian weddings. On March 7 earlier this year, Elizabeth shared an Instagram post celebrating Holi in India with the caption, "Happy Holi! What a glorious time to be in beautiful India with some of my favourite people in the world." The post showed her participating in Holi traditions, playing with colours, and dancing with friends and family. The model’s close friendship with her ex-husband likely plays a part in her continued connection with India.

Following the Holi celebrations, Elizabeth also shared photographs of herself wearing her iconic 1999 Met Gala Versace dress in India, accompanied by the caption, "India has been a pivotal part of my life for over 20 years and I cherish every moment in this magnificent country." The model has inadvertently taken on the role of an unofficial ambassador for India, travelling to destinations across the country. From visiting historical landmarks to experiencing regional cuisines, Elizabeth has immersed herself in every aspect of her travels across the subcontinent. Her social media posts often show her exploring destinations ranging from Jaipur to Alibaug and beyond. She has consistently made an effort to experience and celebrate the rich culture that surrounds her during her visits.
One aspect of Indian culture that Elizabeth has openly expressed her admiration for is Indian fashion. As something she holds close to her heart, the model is often seen wearing elegant sarees and traditional ensembles, frequently paired with intricately crafted jewellery and the occasional bindi. Her appreciation for Indian textiles and craftsmanship extends to her business ventures as well. Much of the production for the kaftans and dresses of her beachwear label, Elizabeth Hurley Beach, takes place in Mumbai. Over the course of two decades, Elizabeth has built not only a professional but also a personal relationship with India.

Elizabeth’s affection for the country was evident even during the pandemic lockdowns, when she shared a series of photographs from her "pretend vacation," revisiting memories of her travels around the world. One such post expressed her eagerness to return to India, recalling a previous trip. The post read, "I’ve moved to India on Day 4 of my #pretendvacation and am at the heavenly @anandainthehimalayas where I’m being pampered into oblivion."

Elizabeth has also made significant philanthropic contributions over the years, most notably through her efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer. She has served as a global ambassador for Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Campaign following the loss of her grandmother to the disease. Her charitable work extends beyond this cause. She has also been appointed a global ambassador for Smile Train, supporting awareness and funding surgeries for children and adults with cleft conditions in India who often face social stigma. On February 13, 2025, during a visit to India, Elizabeth met with children who had undergone surgery as well as others awaiting treatment.
At a time when celebrity associations with destinations can often feel transactional or promotional, Elizabeth’s affection for India appears genuine and enduring. She has repeatedly demonstrated that her relationship with the country goes far beyond a fleeting fascination or a desire to recreate a scene from Eat, Pray, Love. For Elizabeth, India is not merely a destination; it is a country that continues to inspire, surprise, and welcome her with open arms, time and again.
