Kareena Kapoor, who debuted in 2000's Refugee, has successfully completed a quarter of a century in the Hindi film industry; a milestone not many can boast of. Throughout her shining career, the actress has showcased talent, charisma and a wide range of emotions on the silver screen. Along with it, her movie fashion statements too have left an indelible mark on audiences. From playing the sassy Poo in 2001's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to putting her size-zero transformation on display as Pooja in 2008's Tashan, Kareena's on-screen costumes have gone on to find a cult following of their own. On red carpets, off-duty days in Mumbai or travelling across the globe with her loved ones, Kapoor has always cut a stylish figure but none could be compared to the indomitable power her silver screen costumes could hold. As Kareena Kapoor completes 25 years in Bollywood, HELLO! lists some of her best on-screen looks.
1. Nazneen in Refugee
Kareena made her debut in this 2000 Bollywood film, giving the masses a taste of her skill and flair. Playing Nazneen Ahmed; a young woman whose heart is caught in a cross-border romance, Kareena's movie wardrobe featured ethnic wear of vibrant salwar kameez suits, oxidized jewellery, occasional accents of mirror work and minimal makeup with braids in her hair.
2. Priya in Ajnabee
In the 2001 film Ajnabee, Kareena played the character of Priya Malhotra, who unknowingly finds herself in the midst of a whodunnit. Set in Switzerland, her newlywed exuberance was highlighted through her wardrobe of primarily layered Western outfits, pastel tones to match the floral hillscapes and occasional Indian wear.
3. Poo in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Possibly her most iconic role until date, the actress played the role of Pooja Sharma a.k.a. Poo in the 2001 film. Not only was it a completely different role from her previous movie in the same year, it introduced Western glamour and youthful glitz to Bollywood cinema in the early 00s. Decked in Y2K extravagance, her character was unapologetically vain and always ready with a quip. This was reflected through Poo's wardrobe; which included the famous pink bralette with a headband and mini skirt, embellished lehengas, fur scarves and tinted sunglasses.
4. Geet in Jab We Met
Kareena played Geet Dhillon in 2007's Jab We Met, a loquacious and daring young woman, who wasn't afraid to tread into the unknown. After Poo, Geet would possibly rank as the star's next most influential character for the desi fusion dressing the movie brought to the table. Geet wore Patiala pants with t-shirts and shirts with corsets; along with more traditional ethnic wear, thus bringing about a wave across the country in the late 2000s to mix-and-match Indian and Western wear.
5. Kalindi in Veere Di Wedding
In the 2018 movie, Veere Di Wedding, the actress played Kalindi Puri, a fiercely modern women who tackles female societal expectations and marries during the course of the film. She was styled by Rhea Kapoor and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. Her yellow off-shoulder lehenga, by the same designer duo which was seen in the Haldi ceremony scene of the movie, went on to set bridal goals for the traditional Hindu wedding as it combined mirror work and pearls in a contemporary format.
