When Mindy Kaling walked wearing Gaurav Gupta couture at the 2024 Met Gala, every camera was on her. The only question on everyone's mind was, "Who made the excellent dress?". Alia Bhatt and Natasha Poonawalla both made waves during their turns on the Met carpet in bespoke Sabyasachi sarees. Sudha Murthy's Tarun Tahiliani gown was also a special moment, owing to the sheer beauty of the gown. The fashion world's biggest night is days away. As the clock ticks closer to the hour, we can't help but wonder which Indian fashion designer's sartorial excellence we will get to witness this year. We have, time and again, seen Indian celebrity stealing the spotlight at the Met Gala. This year, we hope to see Indian fashion designers leave their mark on the red carpet too.
In the past, Indian designers showcasing their work at the Met Gala have been a rarity. The recent years have seen a significant change as both Indian celebrities and international stars have started favouring Indian couturiers. This year, the theme for the Met is 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style', and the dress code for the event is 'Tailored for You'. So we can expect some sharply tailored pieces on the carpet.
1. Gaurav Gupta
This theme is right on brand with Gaurav Gupta's sharp and artistic creations. In the past, he has dressed Mindy Kaling for the Met and other celebrities such as Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Beyoncé, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Jenna Ortega. If the suit worn by Karan Johar for the Oscars 2025 after-party is anything to go by, we hope that Gupta creates a masterpiece for the big night. We expect stars like Nicki Minaj or Cardi B to be dressed in Gaurav Gupta couture, as they have worked with him previously.
2. Rahul Mishra
Another atelier's work we are hoping to see sprawled at the Met Gala belongs to Rahul Mishra. Having the seal of approval from Law Roach himself, Rahul Mishra's bespoke saree worn by Isha Ambani was among one of the standout moments of the Met Gala 2024. We anticipate the designer will return to the red carpet for this edition. Earlier this year, Mishra dressed Mindy Kaling and Lisa for the 2025 Oscars night, both looks receiving several nods from fashion critics. In the past, Mishra has had an impressive portfolio of working with international celebrities such as Gigi Hadid, Zendaya, Karan Johar, Ananya Panday and more.
3. Sabyasachi Mukherjee
Last year, Sabyasachi Mukherjee became the first Indian fashion designer to walk down the Met Gala red carpet. He dressed Alia Bhatt in a lovely pastel green bespoke saree that had everyone captivated and earned Bhatt a spot on almost every best-dressed list. The Sabyasachi X Schiaparelli moment at the 2022 Met Gala nearly turned Natasha Poonawalla into an Oscar trophy for the 'Gilded Glamour' Met night. It will be interesting to see what the designer has under his hat for this year. As the Met Gala theme this year is more masculine-centric and chaired by like Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky and more, it would be fun to see him style a male celebrity for a change.
4. Rohit Bal
The late celebrated designer, Rohit Bal, passed away in November 2024. What better way to pay tribute to the Indian fashion icon than with a Met Gala debut? After dressing the musical band Indo Warehouse for Coachella 2025, it would be fitting for the house of Rohit Bal to make their way towards the Met Gala. The house's last collection displayed at Lakme Fashion Week was a masterclass in tailoring structured pieces.
5. Falguni Shane Peacock
With clientele like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez, we hope to see extravagant and bespoke pieces by Falguni Shane Peacock at the Met Gala this year. In 2021, the designer debuted at the Met Gala, worn by entreprenuer and philanthropist Susha Reddy. Their show-stopping piece at this year's Lakme Fashion Week featured Tamannaah Bhatia wearing a metallic bejewelled bustier that took the collective breath of fashion lovers away. An elaborated version of that corset would make a stunning display at the gala.
6. Tarun Tahiliani
Sudha Reddy shone in the intricate custom Tarun Tahiliani ivory gown for the 'The Garden of Time'-themed Met Gala in 2024, which can aptly be described as a work of art. The jaw-dropping dress was made by over 80 Indian artisans and was a result of 4,500 man-hours. This is exactly the kind of couture that we deserve to see at the Met Gala, considering he has dressed faces like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian before and has been a favourite of the Ambani family.
