Walk through any Indian city and its fashion identity becomes instantly apparent, but until now, there has been little data to quantify what makes one city more stylish than another. A new City Style Quotient (CSQ) 2026 study by A Diamond Is Forever India by De Beers attempts to do just that, ranking 20 Indian cities using digital conversations, media visibility, retail trade, and fashion industry indicators. While Mumbai and Delhi continue to dominate, the findings reveal a rapidly evolving style landscape where cities like Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Chennai are carving out unique fashion identities.

Mumbai leads while Bengaluru and Chandigarh emerge as standouts

Mumbai topped the City Style Quotient with a score of 96.1 out of 100, followed by Delhi (93.5), Bengaluru (90.2), Kolkata (85.0), and Chandigarh (82.2). While the top three retained their reputation as fashion powerhouses, Chandigarh's fifth-place finish ahead of Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Jaipur highlights the growing influence of smaller fashion markets.

Mumbai also dominated the category rankings, earning titles such as Most Fashionable City Overall, Retail Hub of India, Most Style Visible City, Celebrity Style Capital, and Designer Hub. Delhi reinforced its reputation as the country's trendsetter by being named the Most Fashion Curious City, Most Talked About Fashion City, and Everyday Style City.

One of the report's biggest takeaways came from Bengaluru. Traditionally recognised for technology and startups, the city emerged as India's Trend Uptake Leader and Conscious Style Capital, reflecting the rise of sustainable fashion, homegrown labels, and mindful consumer spending.

Every city has a distinct fashion identity

The study also highlights how India's fashion narrative is becoming increasingly diverse. Chandigarh's strong performance points to growing demand for luxury fashion, premium athleisure, and high-end lifestyle purchases, signalling its transformation into a national style destination.

Meanwhile, Chennai secured one of the report's most distinctive titles by being named India's Jewellery Style Capital, surpassing both Mumbai and Delhi. Long recognised for its appreciation of fine jewellery and craftsmanship, the city now has data to support its reputation. Mumbai continues to lead luxury and celebrity fashion, Delhi dominates conversations and trend adoption, Bengaluru is driving conscious consumption, Chandigarh is emerging as a premium retail market, and Chennai remains unmatched in jewellery.

Together, the findings paint a picture of an evolving fashion ecosystem where every city contributes its own unique style language.
