Each year, the Met Gala sets the tone for fashion’s most imaginative expressions, bringing together global names across fashion, art, film, and culture on one of the world’s most closely watched red carpets. The 2026 edition was no exception wherein Isha Ambani emerged as one of the evening’s most compelling presences. At the Met Gala 2026, Isha delivered a look that moved beyond fashion into the realm of cultural storytelling, using couture as a canvas for Indian art.

Designed by Gaurav Gupta, the ensemble reimagined the saree as sculptural couture. Woven in pure gold threads and detailed with hand-painted Pichwai-inspired motifs, the drape was anchored by Gupta’s signature sculptural cape, giving the silhouette both fluidity and structure. The craftsmanship was extensive, with artisans spending over 1,200 hours bringing together textile, embroidery, and surface artistry into a single cohesive piece.
At the core of the look was a jewellery-integrated blouse. Encrusted with over 1,800 carats of diamonds, emeralds, polki, and kundan, the piece drew heavily from heirloom jewellery, particularly from Nita Ambani’s personal collection. The inclusion of a historic sarpech, once part of the Nizam’s treasury, added a layer of archival significance. The jewellery combined old mine-cut diamonds, rare emeralds, and traditional techniques into a single visual language. Perhaps the most unexpected detail, however, was the accessory that sparked global curiosity: a mango.

A 20-year-old sculpture by contemporary artist Subodh Gupta. Carried in a sheer pouch, the piece served as a quiet but pointed nod to Indian identity, transforming a familiar symbol into high art within the context of the gala’s theme. A jasmine-inspired gajra, reinterpreted as a sculptural hair element, completed the look.
By bringing together couture, heirloom jewellery, and contemporary art, Isha presented a layered narrative of India.
